TALLAHASSEE – A Tampa rap artist who performs under the name “Toon Trill” will be spending time in federal prison after pleading guilty to tax fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.

Torry Williams, 24, of Tampa, was sentenced Friday (Aug. 17)  to 36 months in federal prison after pleading guilty March 30 to theft of government money and aggravated identity theft. The sentence was announced by Christopher P. Canova, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Between November 2012 and June 2013, Williams, who was a student at Tallahassee Community College, was involved in a scheme to file fraudulent tax returns in the names of others, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The IRS issued about $149,847 in refunds based upon these fraudulent returns. As part of the scheme to illegally obtain tax refunds, Williams used the dates of birth, names, and social security numbers of more than 14 different people.

As part of his sentence, Williams was ordered to pay $149,847 in restitution to the government.

This case resulted from an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation.
