Gulfcoast Legal Services will now focus on helping domestic and LGBTQ victims as well as immigrant victims of human trafficking.

ST. PETERSBURG – Beginning in March, Gulfcoast Legal Services will be offering expanded, integrated legal aid services for victims of human trafficking.

GLS has been providing specialized legal services to human trafficking survivors since 2006. With new funding from the Department of Justice, it will continue to assist victims of labor or sex trafficking and will now focus on helping domestic and LGBTQ victims as well as immigrant victims of human trafficking.

Some of the services provided under this new grant include:

  • Injunctions for protection against abuse or sexual violence
  • Assistance with repatriation and family reunification
  • Emancipation of minors from their traffickers
  • Assistance applying for T Visa or other immigration relief
  • Assistance with housing legal matters (eviction, discrimination, etc.)
  • Help with financial stability issues (wage theft, public benefits, identify theft, etc.)

“Human trafficking is modern-day slavery – and it’s happening in our own backyard in the Tampa Bay area,” said Tammy Greer, executive director for Gulfcoast Legal Services. “The local news is full of horror stories about local incidences of trafficking. Sadly, Florida ranks third in the nation for human trafficking, and our area is among the worst in Florida for trafficking. It is important for local survivors of human trafficking to know that they have rights and that assistance is available to help them rebuild their lives.”

Gulfcoast Legal Services is a regional non-profit organization providing free, comprehensive civil legal aid through counsel, advice, representation, advocacy, and education for vulnerable individuals and families in the greater Tampa Bay area. GLS is dedicated to serving vulnerable individuals living in poverty, low-wage workers, persons with disabilities, veterans, the homeless, victims of domestic violence or human trafficking, the LGBTQ+ community, and the elderly who otherwise may not have access to an attorney.
