Convicted Felon Tried to Sell Gun to Licensed Dealer, U.S. Attorney Says

When the dealer refused to buy it, he left the gun by a trash can outside the store, according to the U.S. attorney.

TAMPA – A Tampa man has been sentenced to federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida said.

Zane C. Brassfield, 25, of Tampa, was sentenced to two years and four months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Brassfield pleaded guilty Oct. 22.

According to court documents, Brassfield took a .50 caliber rifle to a gun store and attempted to sell the firearm to the licensed dealer. However, store employees declined to buy the firearm from him. Upon leaving the store, Brassfield left the rifle by a trash can outside, where it was recovered.

As a previous convicted felon, Brassfield is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
