The Sassy Sandpiper: It’s THAT Time Again

Daylight Saving Time | Standard Time | Time Change

The Sassy Sandpiper refuses to “spring ahead.”

By M.R. WILSON, Columnist, TB Reporter

Daylight Saving Time came like a thief in the night. This morning at 2 a.m. precisely, you lost an hour of your life, and if Gov. Rick Scott signs theSunshine Protection Act,” (dumb name) you may never get it back. Congress must “amend existing federal law to allow the change” to year-round Daylight Saving Time. Is there any doubt with all that perceived increase in tourism/recreational revenue? A little, but my money is on greed-driven legislation. Sorry, golfers.

I’m just beginning to feel better in the aftermath of a new year that began unhappily. I don’t want to get slammed by “springing forward” and suffering Time Change Adjustment Disorder (TCAD). Okay, I made that up, but the ill effects are well documented. Starting today, I’m trying an experiment. I am staying on Eastern Standard Time. My laptop and cell phone won’t comply, but technology will not deter me.

That you might think I’ve flipped my Tiddlywinks isn’t a deterrent, either. For someone like me who has a history of medically documented equilibrium problems, refusing to spring forward and fall back is not only an act of civil disobedience, it is an act of radical self-care. Folks like me should have our own flag, or a cause ribbon at the very least.

I won’t grouse against anyone who sleeps until noon and glories in 9 p.m. sunsets. A disruption of the natural order of things represented by Standard Time doesn’t faze such a person in the least. Play on.

Of course, all timekeeping is arbitrary, a consensus to foster the illusion of order and diminish the chaos of missing your appointment for a pedicure.

If we’re planning a meet-up, I’ll simply write the appointed hour sixty minutes earlier on my calendar. You don’t have to worry about a thing.

If I’m an hour late, my apologies. I don’t live in your time zone.
