The Sassy Sandpiper: ‘No Foolin”

The Sassy Sandpiper has some sad news.

By M.R. WILSON, Columnist, TB Reporter

April Fool’s Day was yesterday, in case you missed it.

How did all this foolishness get started? The history of the day is rich with legend and theory. You can read all about it (and some of the best pranks ever) here. Take your pick of possible origins, which include a 16th century pope’s deciding to change the calendar; renewal festivals; medieval Christianity’s Feast of Fools; the French Revolution; classical mythology; a town called Gotham in Nottinghamshire. Or, you may credit Chaucer.

My Dad was a trickster, but I can’t remember any April Fool’s jokes for which he was held accountable. Nor do I have memories of being a prankster or the prankee. Maybe I don’t want to remember.

I hope your April Fool’s Day was mildly amusing and that no embarrassing YouTube videos are going viral at your expense.

Let me extend that wish for mild amusement to include a generous measure of health, peace, satisfaction and well-being as Spring burgeons into Summer.

You see, the Sassy Sandpiper is taking flight for a while. It’s time to visit new shores, reconnect with my flock, rest in the sand, and watch a few sunsets.

I’ll be back. No foolin’.
