TAMPA – While on the campaign trail, President Donald Trump spoke often of changing U.S. policies about immigration.

Among those statements, were promises to “immediately terminate” former President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration, including deportation protections granted to DREAMers, according to U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, in a political flyer.

DREAMers are students who were brought to the U.S. at an early age and know no other home. In 2012, Obama granted the DREAMers a reprieve from deportation through executive action, allowing them to continue to be productive members of society, pursuing education, careers, and in some cases, serving in the military, Castor said in the flyer. These programs currently protect 56,355 undocumented children in the state of Florida alone according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Now that Trump has been inaugurated, DREAMers and other immigrants have questions about the possible effect on them if the president makes good on his campaign promises.

Castor has scheduled a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 25) at Leto High School, 4409 W Sligh Ave., Tampa, to discuss immigration. The conversation will focus on the DREAM Act. Also attending will be Hillsborough County School Board Member Susan L. Valdes, and Dr. Lydia Medrano of the League of United Latin American Citizens, and other experts and family defenders.

“All of us have a stake in our DREAMers because we have invested in them,” Castor said. “DREAMers have played by the rules and now want to join the workforce and give back to their community.”
