‘A Night to Remember’ Benefits Children

Children | Families | Social Services

The Children’s Home Network is a Tampa-based agency that provides services for at-risk children and families.

TAMPA – A fundraiser is scheduled to benefit the Children’s Home Network, which dedicates itself to helping abused, neglected and abandoned children, and supporting local families in need.

The event, A Night to Remember, sponsored by Karl Flammer Ford, is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. May 4 at 10909 Memorial Highway in Tampa. The event, which has a 1950s theme of “Twisting the Night Away,” will feature delicious food, cocktails and live music from Tampa legends, the Fabulous Rockers. Attire from the 50’s is optional, but encouraged. For tickets, go to facebook.com or childrenshomenetwork.org.

The Children’s Home Network story begins 22 years after the end of the Civil War, in a small frontier village in Florida. When Miss Carrie Hammerly came from Leesburg, VA, to visit relatives in 1887, she decided to stay and join the approximately 800 residents that lived in Tampa at the time. History tells us that Hammerly began tending to orphaned and abandoned children in 1892.

In 1920, a fire destroyed the original building. A new home was built by renowned architect, M. Leo Elliott, that was truly groundbreaking at the time. Still standing today at 3302 N Florida Ave., it is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Children’s Home Network remained at that location until 1965, when ground was broken on a new 88 acre property provided by the city of Tampa, off of Old Memorial Highway, where the agency continues to provide residential services with its Kids Village Campus and Adolescents in Motherhood programs.  In addition, the agency provides services at six other locations throughout central Florida.
