Eight Tampa Bay Companies Earn Sustainable Business Awards

The awards are from the Sustany Foundation and University of Tampa Center for Ethics.

TAMPA – Eight Tampa Bay businesses are helping lead the commitment to social, economic and environmental responsibility.

They will be honored at the ninth annual Sustainable Business Awards luncheon at at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (June 7) at the University of Tampa’s Crescent Club on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd.

Presented by the Sustany Foundation and the University of Tampa Center for Ethics, the Sustainable Business Award ceremony is an annual event that recognizes for-profit businesses in the Tampa Bay Area that engage in practices that not only increase economic opportunities but also improve the environment and community. University of Tampa students, under the guidance of Sykes College of Business faculty, developed an evaluation process to determine the winners based primarily on Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines.

Criteria for a Sustainable Business Award include being:

  • a company that strives to be a good citizen of the Tampa Bay community through programs to improve work environment, employee benefits, community infrastructure and charitable outreach programs;
  • a company with economic performance that contributes to the overall economic health of Tampa Bay through local hiring or purchasing, product/service innovation based on customer needs, employment growth and reinvestment; and
  • a company that is engaged in contributing to the environmental health of the Tampa Bay area through programs to reduce waste, decrease energy use, increase recycling, reduce the use of toxic substances in operations and/or through LEED construction.

More than 100 Tampa Bay businesses have been award winners, including such leading employers as Mosaic, Xerox, Premier Eye Care and Sykes.
